about 5HTP
5HTP is a nonprofit, noncommercial public assembly that petitions all of our governing bodies (local, state, federal, and international) to preserve our rights and freedoms as queer people to live as equal members of our society. In doing so, 5HTP dedicates itself to promoting three key elements of our experience: activism, art, environmental conservation.
activism
Queer people have relished their freedom and community on the beaches in fire island pines since the early 20th century, and we don't intend to stop now. We believe honoring the progress we've made in asserting our power is core to the preservation of our hard-won rights and freedoms, and we will continue to do so. Since 5HTP began, we've welcomed more than 10,000 participants in our gatherings, and we look forward to continue expanding our message in and out of fire island pines. If you have a question about our activism or activities, including our compliance with local law enforcement, please email us at activism@5htp.me.
art
The art produced by queer communities, particularly those of color, has been foundational for the advancement of our culture and the culture of the world at large. We create a home for people to express themselves through fashion, design, art, and music. The music we offer at our gatherings largely consists of disco and house music, sounds that have served as the soundtrack to our liberation over the past 50 years and honor the leaders who worked hard to ensure that we can enjoy our rights and freedoms today.
In the course of promoting our art and our culture, we encourage others to collaborate with us to build experiential art at our gatherings. We also welcome DJs and music producers to submit sets and ideas for us to share with others on the beach as well as online. To submit your ideas, email us at art@5htp.me.
environmental conservation
As queer people, we aim to lead by example in how we care for the environment around us. All 5HTP gatherings comply with leave-no-trace standards that leave the environment that hosts us in a better condition after we depart. We consult with local experts to ensure that our activities minimally impact ecosystems around us, and we offer tools to other gatherings to further their leave-no-trace efforts. If you or your organization is interested in these resources or advice, please email us at earth@5htp.me.
support
5HTP does not participates in the promotion of for-profit enterprises and all gatherings have a capitalism-free policy. no good or services are bought or sold by anyone at 5HTP gatherings and no donations are solicited to promote equal participation among attendees. (and no, you can't tip our djs, either.)
In order to support our efforts, 5HTP welcomes anonymous donations from humans, nonprofit organizations and for-profit companies.
